Special Note

Have you ever stitched applique patterns on velour or minky fabrics only to have the edges come undone with the first wash or even earlier? Very careful attention was given to prevent that from happening, if at all possible. On all these applique patterns, the first stitchout is designed to flatten the pile or nap of the fabric so that there is less pull exerted on the sides of the appliqued fabric. Then there is an extra round of topstitching close to the edge to further keep the fabric from exerting pull on the applique edge. Then the applique edge itself consists of a round of loose satin stitches followed by a round of decorative stitches. Together these two rounds
create a crochet edge look. Very dainty and very secure. I highly recommend
that you apply lightweight fusible interfacing to all applique fabric pieces.
This “bonds” the fibers and further decreases the chances of fraying.
If you are placing the applique fabric on non pile/nap fabric, just skip the first
color stitchout and start with color 2. In that case, applying interfacing is not as crucial.
