Gnomes came to us from Scandinavia in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Gnomes are nature spirits that live underground, responsible for the care and prosperity of a farm or family. In Scandinavia, these gnomes (known as julenisse in Norway) are associated with the Christmas season. The gnome visits the homes of good children on Christmas Eve. Children leave a bowl of porridge out for him, the gnome walk through the front doors of homes to hand-deliver presents.
