Date Palm and fruits are important symbols for many cultures. Palm is one of the Christian symbols for the Victory of Life over Death. The ancient traditions honouring the date palm as a ‘tree of life’. In Assyria the date palm was identified as a sacred tree representing the goddess of fertility and as a connection between earth and Heaven. In Greece the date palm symbolised the god Apollo, who was born under a date palm on the island of Delos.
Date also one of The Seven Species which are listed in the Hebrew Bible. Their first fruits were the only acceptable offerings in the Temple. Dates were eaten as thick, long-lasting syrup called “date honey”.
