The stitches are usually geometric and/or symmetrical and can be worked alongside counted or specialty stitches. Traditionally, Hardanger pieces were stitched with white thread on white fabric. Today the style has evolved to include both colored fabrics and fibers. Hardanger designs typically have a layered or textured look. This technique perfectly combined with cross-stitch. You can apply designs on projects like pillows, ornaments, linens and doilies and also on wearable items. Why it’s named Light Hardanger? Typically, Hardanger has a cutwork elements (holes). These designs don’t have a cut area so it will be easy to stitch on any fabric! Originally the design was created for wedding dresses which was stitched on very thin almost transparent silk, looks like organza. Several motifs were combined as borders. See pictures of diagrams.
